ORCHESTRE DE CHAMBRE DE LA MONNAIE

When Gérard Mortier took over the direction of La Monnaie in 1981, several chamber music ensembles were created that derived from the Orchestre Symphonique de La Monnaie (string quartet, string trio, wind quintet, wind octet, brass quintet, double bass quartet, etc.). Since then, the soloists of the orchestra also appear in a polyvalent formation, the Chamber Orchestra of La Monnaie. Its repertory ranges from baroque music (Bach, Vivaldi, etc.) to works of the twentieth century (Schönberg, Britten, Weill, Gulda, Francesconi, etc.) via classical and romantic composers (including Mozart, Schubert, Wagner). The ensemble performs a purely instrumental repertory, but also appears in chamber operas, including Weisse Rose (Udo Zimmermann), Luci mie traditrici (Salvatore Sciarrino), The Turn of the Screw (Benjamin Britten), Der Kaiser von Atlantis (Viktor Ullmann) and Hanjo (Toshio Hosokawa), the latter first performed in 1994 at the Festival of Aix-en-Provence. The Chamber Orchestra of La Monnaie has worked under the direction of conductors such as Kazushi Ono, Sylvain Cambreling, Antonio Pappano, Luca Francesconi, Peter Tomek, Merion Powell and Dirk Boiy. Philippe Boesmans, Julie (Ref.: CYP4626)
Five years after the huge success of Wintermärchen, Philippe Boesmans returns with his fourth opera, Julie. An intimate work, an in camera drama of tortuous human relationships. Thanks to three superb singers, a chamber orchestra and an extraordinary conductor, Julie is perhaps "the finest opera score Boesmans has so far written" (De Morgen).
