DEVREESE Frédéric (*Amsterdam,1929)


The Belgian composer and conductor Frédéric Devreese is an exceptional and remarkable character in the contemporary world of music. Born in Amsterdam on the 2nd June 1929, he received his first music lessons from his father, Godfried Devreese, also a composer and conductor. Later he studied composition under Ildebrando Pizzetti in Rome and under Hans Swarowski in Wenen he studied conducting. His work is very divers and eclectic: chamber music, concertos, symphonic works, operas and film music. A symphony and three ballets are cited from his extensive repertory: Gemini, Mascarade and Don Juan, four piano concertos, a violin concerto, a saxophone concerto, three suites for orchestra: Evocations, Benvenuta and L'Oeuvre au Noir, Twee Bewegingen (Two Movements) and Variations et Thème for a string orchestra, two brass quintets... He wrote music for at least thirty films. For André Delvaux: De Man die zijn haar kort liet knippen (The man who had his hair cut short), Un soir, un Train, Rendez-vous à Bray, Belle, Benvenuta, and L'uvre au Noir. For Noces Barbares and Il Maestro by Marion Hänsel, for La Partie d'Echecs by Yves Hanchar and Hugo Claus' "Het Sacrament". Frédéric Devreese was a conductor with the BRTN Radio and Television. He was the initiator of Tenuto, an annual competition for young soloists. The effectuation of this was commissioned by the Naxos record company in the series Anthology of Flemish Music, 20 CDs of Flemish music. He was awarded several national and international prizes, among these the Prize of the town of Oostende at the age of 19, for his First Piano concerto, the Prix Italia for his TV opera Willem Van Saeftinge, the Georges Delerue Award and twice the Plateau prize for film music.
