Sophie Karthäuser, budding Mozartian Print
Tuesday, 30 October 2007

W.A. Mozart Cover Sophie Karthäuser’s first disc, made for Cypres, has just been released. The first of many, unquestionably. If the complete songs of Mozart, one year after the Mozart anniversary year, might appear a bold choice, it should be emphasised that these works (that she recorded jointly with her colleagues at the Guildhall School, the pianist Eugene Asti and the baritone Stephan Loges) have rarely had the honour of a discographic release. There are, however, some wonders in amongst these miniatures, composed as they were throughout the whole existence of the ‘enfant terrible’ of Austrian music. It is with undiluted joy that we observe the enthusiasm of the French press for our young compatriot: whereas Ivan A. Alexandre revels in he recent Susanna in Diapason, Marie-Aude Roux and Christian Merlin, in respectively Le Monde and Le Figaro, see in her Pamina a Mozartian of the very first rank. How appropriate! for her second disc with Cypres will be a recital of opera arias by Mozart with the Orchestre Symphonique de La Monnaie and Kazushi Ono.
