TUBÉRY Jean

Fascinated by Italian music of the seventeenth century, Jean Tubéry, after studying the recorder in the conservatories of Toulouse and Amsterdam, decided to devote himself to one of the instruments most suited to perform this repertory, the cornett. He then studied with Bruce Dickey in the Schola Cantorum of Basel, where he obtained a diploma for concert performance. He played with groups such as the Clemencic Consort (René Clemencic), Clément Jannequin (Dominique Visse), Les Arts Florissants (William Christie), Collegium Vocale Gand (Philippe Herreweghe), Concerto Vocale (René Jacobs), Hespèrion XXI (Jordi Savall), Huelgas (Paul van Nevel), Cantus Cölln (Konrad Junghänel), Elyma (Gabriel Garrido), La Petite Bande (Sigiswald Kuijken), Il Giardino Armonico, etc. He founded La Fenice, with which he won First Prize in the International Early Music Competition of Bruges (1990) and Malmö (1992). He has made recordings for Ricercar, Accent, Erato, Harmonia Mundi, Sony Classical, Virgin, as well as for many radios and national televisions in Europe and Japan. The CD series 'Monteverdi’s inheritance' for the label Ricercar was greeted by specialist publications as a 'major event in the world of the seventeenth century' (Répertoire, April 1998). Jean Tubéry also teaches the cornet and gives performance classes at the Paris Regional Conservatory. He has been invited to give masterclasses by the national conservatories Lyons, Luxemburg, the European Vocal Centre, the Mannes College of New York, the Summer School of Connecticut (USA) and the Schola Cantorum of Basel (Switzerland). His interest in the vocal repertory also led him to choral conducting, which he studied with Hans Martin Linde and Pierre Cao. He has been invited to conduct groups such as Jacques Moderne (Tours), Dunedin Consort (Edinburgh), Arsys (Vézelay), Norway Solistenkor (Oslo) and the Chamber Choir of Namur (of which he is the titular conductor for early music), in a repertory that ranges from the Renaissance to the French baroque of the 'Grand Siècle'. Their recent recordings of Giovanni Gabrieli and Marc-Antoine Charpentier were hailed by the press as 'references in this domain'. With regard to opera, Jean Tubéry has been invited to conduct La Rappresentazione di Anima e di Corpo by Cavalieri at the Théâtre de the Monnaie in Brussels in 2001. In 2001 Jean Tubéry was appointed 'Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres' by the French Minister for Culture, Catherine Tasca. In November 2003, along with the ensemble the Fenice, he received the 'Grand Prix de l’Académie Charles Cros' for the recordings of Mateo Romero’s Messe pour le Toison d’Or and Giovanni Gabrieli’s Trionfi Sacri. Updated: January 2006

Giacomo Carissimi | Vanitas Vanitatum (Ref.: CYP1644)
Although Carissimi is usually associated with the dawning of the oratorio, he was also the author of a vast and varied body of work, a perfect reflection of the Italian Baroque. Jean Tubéry reveals three works by this great master: the rare oratorio Vanitas Vanitatum, the cantata Sciolto havean dall’alte sponde and the sumptuous mass which derives from it. A magnificent, flamboyant, jubilant recording!
