ORCHESTRE PHILHARMONIQUE DE LIEGE WALLONIE BRUXELLES

LIÈGE PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA WALLONIA-BRUSSELS [2006/2007] Managing Director: Jean-Pierre ROUSSEAU Music Director: Pascal ROPHÉ Music Directors: Fernand QUINET | (1960-1964), Manuel ROSENTHAL | (1964-1967), Paul STRAUSS (1967-1977), Pierre BARTHOLOMÉE (1977-1999), Louis LANGRÉE (2001-2006). The great symphonic formation of French-speaking Belgium Established in 1960, the LIÈGE PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA is the only symphonic formation in the French-speaking Community of Belgium. It receives funding from the Community’s Government, the City of Liège and the Province of Liège. Consisting of 97 musicians, the orchestra gives up to 90 concerts each season, about fifty of which take place at the Salle Philharmonique in Liège, where the orchestra has its residence. It is a regular guest of the Brussels Palais des Beaux-Arts, the Philharmonie in Luxembourg, the Auditorium du Nouveau Siècle in Lille, and the Vrijthof à Maastricht. In 2006/2007, the Liège Philharmonic Orchestra will also play in Paris, Strasbourg, Rotterdam, Charleroi, Eupen, Gent, Mons, Ostend and Verviers. Forging an original identity Over the years, the Orchestra’s has forged an original identity in the international musical arena: French music, 20th century "classics", support for contemporary music (Boesmans, Dutilleux, Escaich, Fourgon, Jacquemin, Ledoux, Lindberg, Mernier and Seba) and, with Louis Langrée, an innovative approach to the classics. Under the direction of Pascal Rophé, the Orchestra has been invited to two prestigious festivals of contemporary music in 2006-2007: MUSICA in Strasbourg (Parra, Schöllhorn, Stockhausen), and PRÉSENCES in Paris (Adès, Dusapin, Fourgon, Mernier). The Orchestra’s discography is a good illustration of these main themes: since 2000, 15 CDs have been issued covering a wide repertory (the Belgian heritage is represented by Dupuis, Jongen, Mathieu and Souris, while the classical repertory consists of Chausson, Franck, Lalo, Liszt, Mozart, Poulenc, Ravel, Schulhoff, Schumann, Weber and Rossini, and contemporary music is represented by Escaich and Mernier). These records received numerous awards (Diapasons d’Or, Victoire de la Musique Classique, Grand Prix de l’Académie Charles Cros, Prix Caecilia...). The Liège Philharmonic Orchestra is broadcast widely at national and international level because of its partnership with Musiq’3, the RTBF’s classical radio station. All types of audiences The Liège Philharmonic Orchestra has, since 2000, been busy ensuring that concerts are held to cater for all types of audiences. In addition to traditional concerts arranged in series according to theme, the Orchestra brings music to children (with the Jeunesses Musicales organisation) and to all those wishing to (re)discover it by organising original events such as "Le Dessous des Quartes" and "Écouter la musique". The season is punctuated by several festivals ("September Nights", "Russian Ballets" and "Do you like Brahms?"). The Orchestra also organises a series of chamber music concerts, baroque concerts and world music events, as well as organ recitals, in the Salle Philharmonique in Liège. In 2006/2007, the entire quartets of Shostakovich and a Schumann "marathon" will be performed. A family of artists The Orchestra helps to promote Belgian artists (David Cohen, Patrick Davin, Laure Delcampe, Lieve Goossens, Jean-Pierre Haeck, Yossif Ivanov, Sophie Karthäuser, Angélique Noldus, Jean-Luc Votano, etc.), and regularly invites renowned artists such as conductors Paul Daniel, Theodor Guschlbauer, Günther Herbig and John Nelson, and soloists Boris Belkin, Frank Braley, Augustin Dumay, Brigitte Engerer, Nelson Freire, Robert Levin, Emmanuel Pahud, Vadim Repin, Andreas Staier and Pieter Wispelwey. It also helps young talent to become known, and brings established artists to the attention of audiences in Belgium (Nicholas Angelich, Christian Arming, John Axelrod, Renaud and Gautier Capuçon, Karine Deshayes, James Ehnes, Edward Gardner, Nelson Goerner, Olivier Latry, Claire-Marie Le Guay, Éric Le Sage, Tedi Papavrami, Thomas Rösner and Petri Sakari). Discography on Cypres

Max Bruch - Complete works for viola and clarinet (Ref.: CYP7611)
The works assembled in this recording, which constitute the complete works for clarinet, were composed in the same year, 1911. His entire life, Bruch searched for an absolute perfection that would reflect spiritual accomplishment. He traversed the same waters as Brahms: the grand symphony, the romantic tradition, the majestic choirs of religious substance.

Joseph Jongen - Camille Saint-Saëns | Symphonie concertante - symphonie N°3 (Ref.: CYP7610)
Dynamism and vigour are the hallmarks of this programme for organ and orchestra passionately conducted by Pascal Rophé with the exceptional Olivier Latry. A coupling of music of Jongen and of Saint-Saëns custom-made for an OPL on top form and with a recently renovated organ that will give us an ideal taste of the different tones of a work with organ, an orchestra in itself!

Mozart | Weber | Rossini | Clarinet concerti (Ref.: CYP7609)
This disc is both the celebration of a departure - that of Louis Langrée, a great Mozartian conductor who was in charge of the Orchestre Philharmonique de Liège for five years, and of a discovery - that of the clarinetist Jean-Luc Votano, born 23 years ago and whose talent radiates throughout this disc with such intensity that he redoubles our pleasure in the concertos of Mozart, Weber and Rossini. A final celebration of the Mozart year, à la Cypres
