AKA MOON
AKA Moon. When you think of this group you think of a continuous process of renewal. Their debut goes back to 1992 when, inspired, they returned from a trip to the AKA pygmies of Central Africa. Since then their creative evolution hasn’t ceased and they have been performing & experimenting with various musical partners. To this day over a dozen CD’s have been produced by AKA Moon, in close collaboration with more than 50 artists of the highest level, which once again illustrates the extraordinary course this group took over the years.
Be it with an Indian Master such as U.K. Sivaraman or a Senegalese artist such as Doudou n’Diaye Rose and his children - percussion-players; with the contemporary music ensemble Ictus or DJ “number one” of the European hip-hop scene Grazzhoppa: Aka Moon never stopped to astonish and open new doors to the world of imagination. In France, for example, we have seen and heard them in the opera of Philippe Boesmans and Luc Bondi (Paris - Châtelet, CD on Deutsche Grammophon) or with choreographer Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker and her dancing company Rosas (Paris -Théâtre de la ville & Bruxelles).
For the Brussels Opera (La Monnaie – De Munt) AKA Moon have completed two special projects: «Jeff Buckley On the Moon » and « Oriental Voices », both of which represent unique moments of fusion between various vocal traditions, rarely brought together otherwise.
Aka Moon has been invited for concerts by clubs, festivals and concert halls in more than 20 countries all over the world. Their music jumps at you, knocks you over, seduces or annoys you, but never leaves you indifferent.
In its initial trio format, the musical personalities of saxophonist and composer Fabrizio Cassol, electric bassist Michel Hatzigeorgiou and drummer Stephane Galland cross over in a kaleidoscopic, virtuoso and elusive way – a whirlwind of unclassifiable, transcending and cosmic music.
Today, Aka Moon performs as a trio, as well as with other artists such as Magic Malik, pianist Fabian Fiorini, guitar player David Gilmore or saxophone player Mark Turner.

AMAZIR (Ref.: CYP0601)
AMAZIR brings together the Aka Moon trio and internationally renowned musicians. This is a special recording in that it has not been conceived as a uniform sequence of traditional musical numbers in ‘standard forms’. Each piece is independent of the others, with just a few cross-over features, such as Cuban influences and their rhythmic particularities, or an exploration of harmonic vibrations.

VSPRS (Ref.: CYP0602)
VSPRS is the studio version of the music for a dance production by the choreographer Alain Platel. Fabrizio Cassol, Aka Moon’s sax player, has written a fascinating score inspired by Monteverdi’s Vespri della Beata Vergine. The project includes many musicians, such as the Aka Moon trio, the ensemble Oltremontano, gypsy musicians and three formidable female singers. This is a monument of classical music, revamped from top to bottom to create the explosive language of a collective vibration matching the pace set by the dancers.
