Wolfgang HOLZMAIR baritone
TRIO WANDERER

The nineteenth century was a period of growing fascination on the part of the continentals for British folklore. Several music publishers therefore had the idea of entrusting some highly regarded composers with making setting of traditional songs, such as had until then been transmitted from a drunk?s mouth to a tippler?s ear. Joseph Haydn and Ludwig van Beethoven were, the two of them, responsible for the redaction of three hundred of these songs. Their themes are pretty straightforward and evoke love, death, life, strong alcohol and heavy feasting. These little playlets set to music are pretexts for outpourings at times of melancholy, at times drollery, wonderfully served by the musician of the ?text? that is Wolfgang Holzmair. This Austrian baritone, known the world over for his intellectual interpretations of German songs, has taken great and particular care with the highly characteristic pronunciation of the various British dialects and also to provide us with a representative selection of this intriguing art form. The Wanderer Trio bring to this disc something that no other trio has until now managed to do: a blend of individual virtuosity, the experience of top-flight chamber musicians and ? especially ? the spirit of these folksongs that enables us to say that, if we had not seen the recording of this disc in a professional studio, we should have thought we were in a smoke-filled pub (minus the noise, of course).
