Max BRUCH Concerto for clarinet, viola and orchestra Romance for viola and orchestra Eight pieces for clarinet, viola and piano
ORCHESTRE PHILHARMONIQUE ROYAL DE LIEGE WALLONIE BRUXELLES Jean-Luc VOTANO clarinet Arnaud THORETTE viola Johan FARJOT piano Pascal ROPHE Conductor
OUT OF STOCK / The Orchestre philharmonique de Liege, the clarinet player Jean-Luc Votano and the label Cypres celebrate their newest recording of works by a composer overlooked by many: Max Bruch. The works assembled in this recording, which constitute the complete works for clarinet, were composed in the same year, 1911. His entire life, Bruch searched for an absolute perfection that would reflect spiritual accomplishment. He traversed the same waters as Brahms: the grand symphony, the romantic tradition, the majestic choirs of religious substance. At the end of his life he composed in more modest formats. In the concert for clarinet and orchestra, the ?melody?, which was Bruch?s fixed idea, emerges from the orchestra like a clear line. And it is surprising that even the third movement of the concert, allegro molto, has the intervention of two instruments that make peaceful parenthesis in the midst of an overwhelming orchestra. The same occurs in the Romance where the audience is captured by the timbre, warm and grave, of the viola played by Arnaud Thorette, all in service of an immeasurable gentleness also characteristic of the Eight pieces for clarinet, viola and piano. One can hear the echo of a regret, something crepuscular but without bitterness, something melodious, not weepy, something delicate but strong.

Mozart | Weber | Rossini | Clarinet concerti (COLLECTOR) (Ref.: CYP7609)
This disc is both the celebration of a departure - that of Louis Langrée, a great Mozartian conductor who was in charge of the Orchestre Philharmonique de Liège for five years, and of a discovery - that of the clarinetist Jean-Luc Votano, born 23 years ago and whose talent radiates throughout this disc with such intensity that he redoubles our pleasure in the concertos of Mozart, Weber and Rossini. A final celebration of the Mozart year, à la Cypres
