There are well-known composers and composers who are less well-known, composers who are little-known and ? let us be honest ? composers who are completely unknown. Victor Vreuls was one such. And yet his curriculum vitae traced out the broad highway of an honourable existence within Belgian music. A protégé of Vincent d?Indy, an active member of the Schola Cantorum, director of the Luxemburg Conservatory, Vreuls made the mistake of keeping well away from outbursts and extreme positions in a period that lacked neither. On the contrary, he settled down into a comfortable, patriarchal, almost reassuring musical language in which the colours of the day ? perhaps the finest period in Belgian music ? flowered quite peacefully. No revolution here, nor indeed astonishment, but humble, beautiful and straightforward music. And that is already a lot.
