ENSEMBLE STURM UND KLANG Thomas VAN HAEPEREN Conductor HET COLLECTIEF Els CROMMEN Soprano Pascale SIMON Flute CENTRE HENRI POUSSEUR_MUSIQUE ÉLECTRONIQUE / MUSIQUE MIXTE Hughes KOLP Guitar
If you had to describe the very unique approach of Jean-Marie Rens in a few words, Debussy's famous words indicating that discipline needs to be found in freedom come to mind in so far as in his work imagination and mastery are inextricably tied to each other. Or does it rather point towards the search for freedom in writing? The composer is after all the one who controls all the aspects of music. Timing, sound, harmony, rhythm and form follow his command and constitute the basis on which his creativity can fully blossom without any concessions. As a fine craftsman, Rens takes possession of the resources of the most diverse traditions ? be they ancient or modern, classical or non-classical (his profound knowledge of jazz be noted at this place) ? in order to create an independent and authentic language that exhibits the subtle and rare intelligence of not breaking with tradition just for the sake of it. The program of this collection is part of that rich path and built on the playful: it is a play of tones, colors and rhythms. The richness of the instrumental vocabulary is only equaled by his virtuosity, which can be seen in Monolithe or Zap. Built upon the lettrist poems of Arnould Massar, Tristes Lettres follows a path which Rens has already treaded on in his previous album Vibrations (CYP4619 | 2003) ? a path on which the music of letters echoes that of notes. At the culmination of this path that is sometimes poetic and sometimes intense but always profoundly anchored in sound, the flutist Pascale Simon dialogues from climax to sweet resolution with the electronics of Jean-Marc Sullon. Those who are keen on hearing the festival "Images sonores" organized by the Centre Henri Pousseur thus have the chance to rediscover and deepen their knowledge of Traces, which has been created there in 2007.
