Georges ENESCO Violin Sonata n° 3 in A minor Arthur HONEGGER
Albert ROUSSEL Violin Sonata n° 1 in A major Charles TOURNEMIRE Sonate-poème
Anne Van Den Bossche piano Pascal Schmidt violin
The sonatas for violin and piano to be found on his CD are rarely performed and here they are very well performed! The connection between these four compositions is of course France, as a native land or as a country of adoption (for Enesco and Honegger). Though the four sonatas performed here share a common romantic spirit, together with harmonic diversity and a particular sensuality, they differ in style: religious influence (and that of Franck) with Tournemire, Bartok's influence and that of Romanian folk-music with Enesco, the desire to conjugate lyricism with formal rigour in the cases of Roussel and Honegger (each, though, in his own way). A duet on the concert stage as in life, Schmidt and Van Den Boscche offer performances of perfection, marvellously bringing out the special style of each work.
